Session 2: Understanding Your Leadership Style

Purpose:  The purpose of this module is to help participants understand that leadership style has a tremendous impact on the ability to communicate effectively with others.  Style awareness helps leaders understand that they have a responsibility to become versatile in how they interact with the world around them, particularly their own employees.  Expanding talents outside of their natural tendencies is critical.

Payoff:  Upon completion of this session, participants will…

  • Have an understanding of what their natural style tendencies are

  • Learn to identify the styles of the people around them

  • Gain an understanding of the tendencies of others

  • Learn how to work effectively with people who are different

Session 3: Communicate By Design

Purpose: The ability to communicate effectively - particularly when situations involve differences of opinion, emotions that run high and individual vested interests – is essential to having a productive and collaborative work environment.

Process: This session will include introduction to key concepts, practice and role play.

Payoff: Upon completion of this module, participants will more effectively ‘choose’ their words and their strategies.  They will communicate by design.  Examples of this include:

  • Understanding the difference between passive, aggressive and assertive communication

  • Abandoning behavioral tendencies when necessary (which is about 75% of the time)

  • Asking and Listening instead of Interrupting and Telling

  • Giving and receiving difficult feedback

  • Choosing your words (examples of what to say, what not to say)

  • Use of positioning statements and transition statements – to enhance the clarity of your message and the context of your message

Session 4: Resolving Conflict and Other Difficult Situations

Purpose: One of the most common shortcomings of a leader is the inability or unwillingness to address conflict and other difficult situations, because they don’t know what to say and what to do.  The purpose of this session is to help leaders move from ‘avoidance’ or from mishandling a situation to handling it productively, with confidence and respect.  In addition, leaders will learn how to create the foundation for a conflict-free environment.

Process: This session will include introduction to key concepts, practice and role play.

Payoff: Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to develop and execute strategies to handle uncomfortable situations.  They will be able to:
